The Yanka Kupala National Academic Theatre was established in September 1920 on the base of the First Association of Belarusian Drama and Comedy. Its first artistic director was Florian Zhdanovich. In 1944 its director Lev Litvinov staged the famous "Paulinka". The same year the theater was named after the great Belarusian poet and playwright Yanka Kupala. In 1955 the theatre was awarded the Academic status and in 1993 — the National status.
